The Cinema Series: A must for students interested in film

By Andrew Chalker | Staff Writer

The Cinema Series is an event that is put on by Professor of Film, Mathew Buzzell. The goal is to bring out the intricacies of the film medium to students and families here at Augusta University, and every screening takes place at the Maxwell Theatre on the Summerville Campus.

The event has hosted many film classics such as Alien, The Godfather, 2001: A Space Odyssey, etc, but what makes this event so special is the carefully selected films that fall into a rather niche category that are on display here. A wide variety of genres have been covered throughout its run here at Augusta University with some notable ones including documentary, drama, animated, horror, anime, short films and even international films as well.

A majority of the films showcased aren’t readily available in theaters either, so attending the Cinema Series is one of the best ways to watch some of these movies on the big screen. This is also perfect for those with a busy schedule as well because there are always at least two different time slots for each film’s screening.

The most recent film on display, “Robot Dreams” by Pablo Berger is going to be screening on Thursday, August 29th between 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. For those who are interested in going, the admission price is always free and you can even bring your friends and family from outside of Augusta University.

For any student (not just film and digital storytelling majors), this is an excellent event that will give you a greater appreciation for the medium. If you want to stay up to date with The Cinema Series, you can follow their Instagram page @cinemaseriesaug, or just look around for the flyers on campus, Professor Buzzell always puts them up early so you can make plans to attend!
