Smart Grocery shooting on Wrightsboro Road sparks Jag Alert
By Rakiyah Lenon | Editor in chief
The Richmond County Sheriff’s office responded to a shooting on Dec. 11, at 8:50 p.m., on Wrightsboro Road near the Smart Grocery convenience store.
A 32-year-old man named Jeremiah Emmanuel Griffin was killed in the shooting and pronounced dead on the scene.
Just under an hour later, Augusta University Police sent out a Jag Alert, warning the surrounding community of the potential threat.
According to Richmond County Sherriff’s office, someone in connection with the shooting has been taken into custody, but they are still searching for a juvenile suspect at the time of this report.
Part of the reason the Jag Alert was issued was due to the shooting’s close proximity to areas of campus, including Christenberry Fieldhouse and the surrounding Forest Hills Campus. A number of students live in nearby apartment complexes.
Just last year in 2022, an individual was shot to death at the same location.
In the alert, AU Police provided these safety reminders:
Do not walk alone on or off-campus, especially after dark.
Protect yourself from strangers and acquaintances by paying attention to your surroundings.
Notify AU Police immediately if you have any questions or safety concerns.
Immediately report crimes to the University Police. This can aid in the identification of responsible parties.
Call AU Police at 706-721-2911 for a Safety Escort if you have to walk alone and feel unsafe.
