Staff report

Significant amounts of rain from severe thunderstorms have resulted in flooding in sections of Augusta University’s Summerville Campus on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Several tornado watch alerts and severe thunder storm warnings have been issued for the CSRA region and are expected to last throughout the remainder of the day. Local meteorologists have warned of heavy wind gusts up to 70 mph.

Area counties cancelled in-person classes on Jan. 9 for students including Richmond, Aiken and Edgefield because of the weather. Augusta Technical College and Aiken Technical College cancelled class for the day as well.

Despite weather concerns, AU remained open for classes as scheduled, though some professors opted to cancel meeting in person.

The atrium in Allgood Hall on the southwest side of the building (nearest the main Allgood parking lot) walkways on Summerville Campus were overrun with water that made it difficult to walk between buildings. The field outside the old science hall was also saturated.

In previous storms, heavy flooding has also been reported at the Health Sciences Campus.
