Remembering Laken Riley
By Rakiyah Lenon and Maxwell Shaffer | Editor in chief, Staff writer
Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student of Augusta University, touched the lives of many before her life was tragically cut short on Feb. 22 when she was killed while out for a run in Athens (Ga.).
Riley’s funeral was held at Woodstock City Church, where she was remembered by family, friends and members of the community on Friday, March 1.
Riley, an avid runner, was a native of Woodstock (Ga.). She attended the University of Georgia before transferring to AU’s College of Nursing in Athens. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega.
There has been a large outpouring of support on social media, with many people remembering and sharing their memories of Riley.
AU Provost Neil MacKinnon said it was shocking to learn of Riley’s passing considering the events surrounding her death.
“I attended the memorial service for her in Woodstock, Georgia, and it was one of the most emotional and powerful events I have ever attended,” said MacKinnon. “None of us know how long our light will shine on this planet, but it was evident that Laken’s light touched many people during her 22 years here.”
Amelia Oswald, a student at the University of Georgia and a friend of Riley, said, “She was such a kind soul and someone who would just light up any room she walked in. I love her so much and I will miss her forever.”
A vigil was held on campus in Athens on Feb. 26, to remember Riley and another student who died hours earlier.
A fundraiser was started to help the family with funeral costs, creating a scholarship in her name and bringing awareness to homicide and safety for women. It has since surpassed its goal of $35,000, reaching over $175,000 in donations.
