Jaynes, Troyer pick up distance run wins at Victor Icebreaker Duals at Berry

Staff report

Augusta University sophomore Avery Jaynes took first place in the 5,000-meter run in the Victor Icebreaker Duals at Berry College in Rome on Saturday, March 4.

Jaynes ran a time of 14 minutes, 50.38 seconds in the season-opening event for AU’s track and field teams.

“Going into the race, there wasn’t really a set plan,” Jaynes said. “We had all talked about what we wanted to do, but it was mainly going out by feel. I knew there were guys in the race that had some solid times, and since it was the first race of the season, I wanted to go out with the front pack and see where it took me.”

Four of his teammates finished in the top 10. Patrick Motes was sixth, Carlos Rodriguez seventh, Andrew Todd eighth and Tripp Miller 10th.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, AU’s Hans Troyer was first in 9:47.49. The Jaguars’ Andrew Todd was second in 10:08.80.

“It was definitely a rust buster for all of us out there,” Troyer said. “A few of the guys performed great, but for the most part we are all just trying to find our race legs again.”

Troyer expects he and his teammates to get better with time.

“Even in two weeks, I think we will see significant improvement,” he said.

In the women’s 5,000, Augusta’s Hannah Beech took second, followed by Madison Kennedy in third and Riley Triplett in fourth.

Triplett was second in the 1,500 meters, with Beech finishing fifth.

Augusta will next complete in the Rams Invitational on March 17-18 in Columbia, S.C. That meet is hosted by Columbia International University.
