Jaguars tied for fifth through 36 holes of NCAA D1 Athens Regional

The Augusta University women’s golf team found itself tied for fifth after the first two rounds of the NCAA Division I Athens Regional on Tuesday, May 9.

Behind the play of freshman Mirabel Ting, the Jaguars forged a tie with Ohio State and Ole Miss at 15 over. The top five teams after tomorrow’s final round advance to the national championship tournament. Ting shot a 72 after an opening-round 74. She found herself tied for 15th in medalist play.

She was not the only AU golfer to improve from the first day to the second. Napabhach Boon-In shot eight shots better on the second 18 with a team-best 71 after a 79 on Monday. Boon-In is tied for 32nd. Kennedy Carroll, who also carded a 79 in the first round, improved almost as much, shooting a second-round 72. Carroll is tied for 37th.

Victoria Zheng dropped a couple of shots, from a 73 to 72, but she still found herself in the top 25 with a T23. Chiara Sola is the fifth Jaguar, and she is at 152, which is tied for 41st.

Host Georgia leads the team race. Playing on their home course, the Bulldogs are 15 under par. South Carolina, the top seed, is second at 5 under par, followed by San Jose State at 7 over par. Maryland is fourth at 13 over par.

Jenny Bae of UGa. has a three-shot lead over the Gamecocks’ Louise Rydqvist. Bae shot a tournament-best 67 after an opening-round 69 to be at 8-under-par 136. Rydqvist stands at 139, followed by Georgia’s Jo Hua Hung and Furman’s Anna Morgan, both at 4 under par.

The competitors are playing the par-72, 6,347-yard UGa. Golf Course and for the right to play in the D1 nationals at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 19-24.

The other regionals are in Raleigh, N.C., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Pullman, Wash., San Antonio, Texas, and Westfield, Ind.

The final round of the regionals will be played Wednesday, May 10. AU’s players will tee off in the 8 o’clock hour, paired with Maryland and Ohio State.
