The Augusta University volleyball team put another victory in the books on Tuesday, Oct. 4, against Georgia College and State University, winning 25-19, 25-22 and 25-11.
Augusta started strong with 17 kills in the opening set alone. After a tight second set, the third set was “solid form start to finish,” according to AU Coach Sharon Quarles. The Jaguars more than doubled GCSU in points in the final set.
Throughout the match, Augusta University had the advantage in kills, blocks, aces, digs and assists.
The Jaguars were led by their two players from Phoenix, Ariz. Outside hitter Jazmyn Wheeler paced AU (5-2, 13-5) with 15 kills. Wheeler was complemented by middle blocker Alexis Diaz-Infante, who was not too far behind with 11 kills and four blocks.
On the defensive end, libero Kiera Barr made 14 digs. Teammates Abigail Breeden and Dariana Luna both had 11 digs. Samantha Zittrauer helped the Jaguars with a total of 22 assists.
“It was a very solid performance, especially against Georgia College,” said Quarles afterwards. “Everyone thinks that we are their backyard rival, which is the case with Georgia College. We were ready to play. There were moments in each set where we lost some points, but then we took the lead and finished it off. So we were very solid from start to finish.”
Rachel Machovec led the Bocats (4-3, 8-10) with 15 kills.
AU will be on the road at Young Harris College on Friday, Oct. 7. Coach Quarles said the Jaguars are “looking forward to it,” and that it is the “first confrontation” against that team so “it should be a good one.” That match will take place at 6 p.m. and can be watched at pbcsportsnetwork.com.
Tuesday was Faculty Appreciation Night at Christenberry Fieldhouse. Prior to the match beginning, each player honored a faculty or staff member that has helped them in not only their athletic journey but also their academic one.
The Jaguars are currently in second place in the PBC, a half game behind leader Lander.
