Jaguar softball sweeps Chowan behind Poff's big day

Bobbi Poff hit two home runs and had five hits, five RBI and three runs to lead the Augusta University softball team to a sweep of Chowan at Jaguar Softball Field on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

The sophomore second baseman hit the two homers in an 11-3 victory in the opener. She then had two hits in the second game, a 4-3 Jaguar win in eight innings.

Paige Patterson also homered and had four RBI for AU (6-2) in the opener, and Grace Bridges and Lauren Slade each had four hits for the Jaguars. Alissa Bolinger (3-1) was the winner on the mound. She allowed three runs on six hits. She struck out six.

In the second game, freshman Ansley Gibson (3-1) got the win with three innings of no-hit ball. Freshman Hannah Turner started and allowed three runs on six hits in five innings.

Patterson started the bottom of the eighth on second base and advanced to third one Bailee Roberts’ sacrifice. Lauren Evens then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Patterson with the game-winning run.

Robert had three hits in seven at-bats in the doubleheader.

Chowan (2-2) was led by Mckenzie Wisenheimer, who went 3 for 5 in the two games.

The Jaguars will host Anderson in a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Baseball loses to Emmanuel

The Jaguars (1-4) had a 4-2 lead after five innings, but they could not hold in a 13-9 loss to Emmanuel.

Kyle Lodise and Trevor Maddox homered for AU. Lodise, who had a three-run shot, went 3 for 5 with three RBI, and Maddox went 3 for 3 with three RBI.

The Lions (5-4) score four runs in the sixth and six in the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Jaguars did score two in the seventh and three in the eighth to make it close.

Up next is a weekend series at Young Harris that starts on Friday, Feb. 17.

Tennis upsets The Citadel

The AU men’s tennis team edged The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., on Feb. 14 by a 4-3 score. The Jaguars (3-0) won three singles matches and two of the three doubles to take home the victory. Singles winners were Quentin Cano Perez, Herick Isago and Elie Azoulay.

The Jaguar women’s tennis team hosts North Georgia on Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. at Newman Tennis Center. The AU men are at Emmanuel on Friday, Feb. 17.
