Food review: Slim Chickens – a promising arrival in the chicken sandwich craze

Lookout, Augusta. It seems a new competitor has hit the playing field – chicken sandwiches beware.

Augusta has a new chicken sandwich from Slim Chickens, and I believe, after careful consideration, that it may rival that of Chick-fil-A and Popeyes.

Slim Chickens opened its doors and drive through window on Aug. 26, 2021 on Washington Road in Evans, Georgia.

Opening day was just as busy as expected as the line wrapped around the building and almost out of the parking lot into the street. People lined up without hesitation as looking for a new place to get the chicken fix.

Gazing at the menu you will see the normal fast food chicken items, Chicken Fingers and Chicken Sandwich's. Look a little more and you will notice more unconventional items like chicken and waffles, fried mushrooms and ranch chips. Hungry yet?

I patiently waited for my turn at the window and was greeted warmly by a nice woman who took my order. I ordered the chicken and waffles, Cajun chicken sandwich, chocolate milk shake and a strawberry milk shake.

Once the food was in my car, I couldn’t wait any longer so I parked and opened the bag. All the food was hot and fresh.

My first observation was the Cajun sandwich as the box that it came in had an interesting design and was more appealing than a plain box. At first bite, it might be the best chicken sandwich I have had in a while. The Cajun sauce added a great burst of flavor and character; it never was too hot to take away from the overall experience of the food.

I then turned my full attention to the chicken and waffles. The chicken strips on top of the crispy, thick Belgum waffle, just like the chicken in the Cajun sandwich, was so juicy and cooked to perfection. Pour the maple syrup on top of both to enjoy the flavor combination no longer meant just for Sunday brunch.

Finally, the milkshakes were top notch. Both the chocolate and strawberry milkshakes came in foam cups with the Slim Chickens logo. Real ice cream is the main ingredient here, but as crazy as it sounds the best feature to the milkshakes wasn’t the ice cream but the straws used. Slim Chickens gives you straws that are wide and strong, not the small and flimsy ones that can make drinking milkshakes a frustrating and miserable experience.

Slim Chickens is located at 4311 Washington Rd, 30809 Evans, GA. in the same building as the old PDQ.
