Greenblatt Library to host 'Segregated Doctoring' history lecture with Dr. Pollard
By Clara Sorrow | Managing Editor
Dr. Leslie J. Pollard, a retired professor from Paine College, will be presenting a free lecture in the Greenblatt Library Historical Collections and Archives Room on Aug. 23, between 4:30-5:30 p.m.
The event, entitled “Segregated Doctoring”, is largely based around his book on the same subject. He specifies the struggles that black physicians faced in the post-Reconstruction Augusta area, with his book traversing the years of 1902-1952.
It is hosted partly in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Greenblatt Library’s construction, but also in celebration of the work Dr. Pollard has put into educating students about the history of the world around them. Dr. Pollard began his career teaching at Paine College.
His work is largely based in the education of students on modern medicine, but also on the history of segregated medicine, with African American doctors historically struggling to be allowed to practice.
There will be light refreshments available for attendees, and copies of “Segregated Doctoring: Black Physicians in Augusta, Georgia, 1902-1952” will be available for purchase.
