The Augusta University Jaguars defeated the Allen University Yellow Jackets 79-57 on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
AU had a dominating performance in the first half as the Jaguars led 48-29 at halftime.
Allen outscored the Jaguars in the third period 12-9, but AU wasn’t phased as they came back 22-16 in the fourth period and claimed the win.
“We found a way to win,” said AU Coach Millette Green. “I think the key was turning them over 34 times.”
Kiera Howard led AU with 23 points. November Morton finished with 17 points, making five three-pointers. Kennedi Manning led with 6 rebounds.
“It feels good to get the win,” said Howard. “I’m just trying to do everything to help my team.”
Green said Howard was a huge help in the win over the Yellow Jackets.
“Kiera had 7 steals,” Green said. “Every time we needed a big play, I thought she stepped in and made a big play, just continuing to spark us offensively and defensively. We go where she goes. She’s the heart and soul of our team.”
The Jaguars have some time off for exams before their next competition, and Green wants to focus on free throws and rebounds in the next week.
“We need to improve our free throw percentage, our rebounding,” Green said. “Those are two things that really stood out to me that we definitely need to change going into the next game.”
Howard is proud to be 6-1 but agrees with her coach that the team has things to work on.
“We definitely can’t let up. Just because we’re 6-1, we can’t think that that’s something,” said Howard. “We’re just gonna go back to the drawing board and work on being consistent.”
AU travels to Wingate University on Dec. 11. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
