Augusta University held freshman convocation for approximately 1,000 new students at the Summerville Campus on Aug. 10, 2021.

Provost Neil MacKinnon was a key speaker for the event as the freshman were introduced to the school with a class pinning ceremony, new alma mater and class of 2025 photo.

Referring to the diversity of the school, MacKinnon said: “That’s the one thing that makes us stronger as a university.”

Addressing the new students, MacKinnon gave advice on what they can expect in their upcoming academic journey.

“You’re about to be challenged this year in a classroom like you have never been challenged before, and be open to learning new things. Be humble. Show humility,” he said.

MacKinnon stressed the importance of learning during college as he encouraged students to be “open to new ideas.” He also pushed the freshmen to be passionate about their course of study and communicate.

“Building relationships with others—I encourage you to continue to do that,” said MacKinnon.

MacKinnon concluded by reminding the freshmen to make the most of their time at Augusta University.

“Be humble, hungry and smart in all that you do at AU. Over the next four years, you will develop as citizens. Expand your minds and build friendships,” he said.  “You will make contributions back to society.”

Mahadia Islam, a kinesiology major and president of Augusta University’s Student Government, spoke to the audience of freshmen and thanked everyone for creating a welcoming environment for incoming students.

Islam mentioned the values of Augusta University which include excellence, inclusivity, integrity, leadership, compassion and collegiality.

“Make sure you are being compassionate to yourself,” Islam said.

She also spoke of how students can play an active role in the university.

“I encourage you to get involved on campus. There are all sorts of ways to get involved,” said Islam.

Freshman students also shared their thoughts on the ceremony.

“I think it was pretty cool,” said Ana Ayala Cosme, a biology major. “It builds a sense of community.”

Destiny Barrett, a cyber security major, said she enjoyed the convocation in a meet-and-greet with various departments and AU organizations in the Grove afterwards.

“There has been so many events,” Barrett said. “I actually do feel welcome here. It’s really fun.”

Speaking on why she chose to attend Augusta University, she said: “I was really set on Augusta University because of cyber. There is a huge movement for it right now. I’m excited for it.”

In the Grove, students had a brunch and spoke with faculty across multiple departments throughout the university to prepare for the first day of school.

Classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021.
