Luke Anderson is the president of the Black Student Union, an organization at Augusta University that supports and provides resources to Black student organizations on campus.

The Black Student Union was originally founded by Dr. Roscoe Williams and has been around for 52 years. Williams gathered with a group of African Americans, in order to create an organization that separates them from everyone one else on campus. The idea is to make that sure everyone excels and that their voices are heard.

Anderson, who is currently in his junior year at Augusta University, has been involved on campus since his freshman year, from being a resident assistant to being nominated as the Homecoming Duke for 2022 and now president of an organization. Anderson isn’t afraid to get involved.

“I love helping people, which is a big part of why I chose to pursue a nursing major,” he said.

The BSU aims to provide support and resources to all black student organizations on campus, making sure everyone excels and their voices are heard. The organization pledges to advocate for a socially just campus climate that “recognizes the value of all our humanity and to be inclusive, igniting the intellectual and philanthropic ambitions of our members.”

“We’re like a family,” said Anderson.

As president of the BSU, Anderson is responsible for micromanaging and making sure everything is in order, so that the organization continues to thrive.

“I have the opportunity to be the voice for students and meet new people on campus,” he said.

As with some things in life, there are also downsides to being in a position of authority. Anderson, who is a nursing major, sometimes struggles to balance his priorities.

“Being the president of BSU can be a little frustrating because I have a really busy schedule and nursing school can become a bit much,” he said.

For Anderson, the BSU is worth his time because it aims to provide a space for everyone and create long lasting memories.

“Members of BSU can expect inclusivity and an unforgettable experience that can be beneficial in the long run,” he said.

The BSU makes sure that their members receive recognition for their hard work, whether it’s through social media posts, hosting celebratory events or simply showing support.

“We are currently doing “spotlight” posts on Instagram, to show the work that our members are doing around campus,” he said.

For those who may be struggling to fit in, Anderson said it is important to come out of your shell and be active on campus.

“Step out of your comfort zone, go to events, try to meet new people and be approachable,'“ he said. “You never know who can change or impact your life.”
