AU's Steyn finishes strong in Maui Jim tournament

Augusta University freshman Gareth Steyn finished the Maui Jim Invitational strong as he turned in a final-round 69 at the Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Steyn started out Sunday on the back nine, and he shot 32 (3 under par) and then shot 37 (2 over par) on the front nine for a 1-under-par day. Steyn finished the tournament tied for 46th with an overall score of 1 under par.  (Mirabel plays as a par-70, 7,115-yard course.)

AU teammate Viktor Lindgren, a junior, had the next best tournament result as he turned in a final-day even par 70 to finish the weekend at 2 over par. Lindgren finished the first tournament of the season for the Jaguars tied for 64th place.

Sophomore Jack Vajda finished the final day at 4 over par. He shot 37 on both the front and back nine Sunday. Vajda finished the tournament at +11 and tied for 83rd. 

Jaguar sophomore Hampus Wijkstrom finished the tournament in sole possession of 88th place. Wijkstrom turned in a 75 round and an overall score of 13 over. Wijkstrom shot 37 on the front and 38 on the back nine. 

Dawson Booth finished the tournament in 89th place with a final score of +19. Booth shot 42 on the front nine and 35 on the back nine for a 77 for the final round.  

Auburn sophomore J.M. Butler shot a career-low 63 in round three to win by one stroke over Georgia Tech sophomore Christo Lamprecht, who finished Sunday with a 66. Butler had a career best weekend as he surpassed his 18, 36 and 54-hole lowest rounds en route to a 17-under-par three-day total.  

Georgia Tech took home the team championship at 44 under par. Tech held off a hard-charging Clemson team. which finished at -43. 

AU finished the tournament in 14th place with a combined score of +25.  

The Jaguars head to Chattanooga, Tenn., on Sept. 20 for the Honors Course Intercollegiate. This is the same course the Jaguars won their first NCAA National Championship in 2010.
