Augusta’s ever growing film community

Augusta’s ever growing film community

By Andrew Chalker | Staff Writer

Over the past few years, the film medium has seen massive growth across the country, but more importantly, right here in Augusta. Events are popping up left and right for those who are interested in film and it doesn’t look like its going to be slowing down anytime soon.

Recently, Sacred Heart Augusta hosted a ‘Silent Movie Night’ featuring films from the late Buster Keaton. The goal of the event was to provide an appreciation for the lost art of silent films and movie making of the time.

Uniquely, Buster Keaton had done all of his own stunts for these films with many of them being extremely dangerous, as they had no other means of faking anything at the time. The event had Ron Carter (a live musician) play the soundtrack alongside the film as well. All proceeds from the ticket sales went back to the Sacred Heart Cultural Center; a good time for a good cause.

On September 28th, LeChat Noir in downtown Augusta is hosting ‘The Third Annual 31 Days of Cine Film Festival.’ The event contains a collection of short horror films from filmmakers all across the Southeast. The film festival will be free for anyone to attend and if you’re over 21, they will be serving drinks as well. Although there is no age limit, they do warn that not all material will be suitable for children. With that in mind, and October right around the corner, this seems like an absolute must for film lovers of Augusta.

On the other side of things, the Miller Theater in downtown Augusta is going to be featuring a plethora of well-known family friendly movies for everyone to enjoy all throughout September. ‘Movies At The Miller’ is screening classics like “Puss in Boots,” “Despicable Me,” “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” and “Frozen.” While these films may not be every cinephile’s first pick, it’s still a great event for anyone of any age to enjoy.

Coming up on September 26th, our very own Augusta University is screening a film titled “Green Border" for ‘The Cinema Series.’ This event is always free of charge and it takes place at the Summerville Campus in the Maxwell Theater. There will be two screenings, one at 2:30pm and another at 7:00pm. As always, ‘The Cinema Series’ is an amazing event put on by Film Professor Matthew Buzzell and is a good time all around for hardcore fans of cinema and casual viewers alike.

There are countless other film related events happening all across Augusta, but it would be impossible to highlight each and every one of them. If you have any interest in delving into the world of film, or just love watching movies, Augusta is home to many great film festivals and film screenings.

If you can’t make an event or just can’t afford to go, there seems to be a new screening popping up every week or so, and a majority of them are free of charge. If you love film and are interested in these types of events happening in Augusta but don’t know where to begin, start with ‘The Cinema Series’ as it’s free and it’s right here on campus!
