Augusta University Art Show: In photos

On Friday, April 26 in the City Gallery, located in downtown Augusta a reception was held to showcase over 100 pieces of art from faculty, staff, alumni and students from AU.

This event took place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. where members of the community could drop in and see the exhibition, meet some of the artists and grab a snack.

The exhibition has a large array of artwork from the AU community including ceramics, photography, animation studio works, paintings and more.

The exhibition was curated by Heather Dunaway who is the gallery director for the Greater Augusta Arts Council. The event came into fruition after faculty member Randy Pace had a show at the same building a year prior and they wanted to do a show where faculty and students could show off their work in a public space. This expanded into including alumni, staff and any current students wanting to show their work, regardless of major.

This is also an event that Dunaway is hoping to make this exhibition an annual event. If community members are interested in getting their art displayed in this gallery or to find out more about the Greater Augusta Arts Council visit here

A faculty member, Scott Thorp, the Chair of Art and Design and Associate Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research showcased art the exhibition and is impressed with the work done by the community.

“A lot of students in here are not art majors and there's actually people at the institution who really don't have much to do with the art department that are in here,” Thorp said. “We have students in the department who are retired chairs of other departments so this hits all the things about community.”

Thorp also mentions students being able to have their work on display and show that they are active artists looks great on their resumes and gets them used to exhibiting.

Gerry O’Meara, an alumnus of the medical school and recent graduate of the MBA program, also had some art displayed in the exhibition. One of her art pieces, pictured below, begins with a bowl cut in half and placed at the center and around the center are fragments of other bowls or mugs created into a beautiful mosaic.
