On Friday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m., students filled the Summerville amphitheater in eager anticipation to see who would be crowned the next Augusta University Homecoming King and Queen at the 2021 Coronation.
The event opened up with A Nickel Bag of Funk, an R&B, Hip Hop, Rock and Soul infused band based out of Savannah, GA. They entertained the crowd as the group covered throwbacks such as “No Diggity” by Blackstreet and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince with a unique, groovy sound. Joyous shouts and cheers swept the audience when the band broke out in a line dance song called “Before I Let Go” by Maze.
Following the performance, the winners were announced of the various competitions that campus organizations participated in throughout the week.
Black and Blooming, an empowerment community for Black women at AU, won Pass The Paw which headed the Coin Wars competition. They raised over $2,500 dollars from participation in total and the group won $300 to donate to a non-profit organization of choice.
The Greek organization Zeta Tau Alpha raised over $3,000 and was the first place winner of $400 for Pass the Paw and Coin Wars. The first place winner of the Most Spirited Banner Competition for a Greek organization was Alpha Chi Omega.
After the competition announcements, the 2020 and 2021 homecoming court lined the stages in preparation of revealing the new royals. Everyone was silent as the audience held their breaths in waiting.
“Our 2021 Augusta University Homecoming Queen is Asha Sookraj,” said the announcer. “Our 2021 Augusta University Homecoming King is Jayvon Nougaisse.”
The audience applauded and loudly shouted for each winner with great excitement. People swarmed the new king and queen while taking photos.
Nougaisse could not make out words about his win. He was speechless yet grateful for the opportunity.
Sookraj was in the middle of an interview when she was surrounded by a mob of friends who greeted her with tears, hugs and many congratulations.
“Honestly this is such a blessing and I could have not done this without everyone else,” said Sookraj.
