Augusta National recap: Scottie Scheffler wins 88th Master’s Tournament

Scottie Scheffler won the 88th Master’s tournament and earned his second green jacket in three years on Sunday, April 14, shooting 11 under par.
This was one of the toughest weekends ever at Augusta National as the conditions of the course made it trickier than it already plays. The wind gusts of over 25 miles per hour certainly didn’t help with that.
The tournament got underway and the first day was a doozy, as LIV tour’s Bryson DeChambeau shot what became a round best for the tournament, 7 under par. Scheffler finished second on the day shooting a 66 (-6).
In the second round is when the course really started getting to the players as the best score on the day was a 69 (-3), shot by Ludvig Åberg.
DeChambeau shot a 73 (+1), Scheffler finished even on the day and Max Homa shot 1 under, leaving them all tied for the lead.
Then we went into the third round on Saturday, April 16, also known as “Moving Day.” The third round is called that because that’s the time you want to put yourself in position to make a run at the green jacket in the final round.
Moving Day proved who would make a run as Scheffler shot 1 under to keep taking the solo-lead as we saw DeChambeau fall from the top, 3 over par. Max Homa shot one-over and fell two strokes behind. Collin Morikawa shot the second-best score of the round putting him at 6 under for the tournament and only one stroke out from the lead.
Morikawa played very good, but under-the-radar golf as he came out of nowhere to be in the final pairing with Scottie Scheffler on Sunday.
The final round is where experience and the “clutch” gene come into play. As the leaders began to play, we started to see those who weren’t quite ready for the moment fall apart and the “big dogs” prevail.
Scheffler distanced himself from the field, as he birdied holes 13, 14 and 16, to run away from second place Åberg who finished at 7 under par.
This meant another Master’s tournament win for the World’s No. 1 ranked player, he has held that title for over 80 weeks.
“It’s hard to put into words how special this is to me,” said Scheffler. “I’m going to go home this week and soak it in, but this isn’t a very satisfying sport because I’m supposed to tee it up against this Thursday.”
This green jacket makes him the seventh World No. 1 to win the tournament while holding that ranking and the second player to do it twice. The first being arguably the greatest golfer of all time in Tiger Woods who did it first in 2001-02.
Woods was also in the headlines this weekend as he set the record for most made cuts at the Master’s consecutively with 24. He went on to finish the tournament 16 over par, a career low for the five-time green jacket winner.
In the next PGA Tour event, Scheffler won the RBC Heritage Tournament in Hilton Head Island, S.C., on Monday, April 22. It was the fourth win in the last five tournaments in which he’s played.
