The Augusta University women’s tennis team lost to the University of North Georgia 4-2 on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Newman Tennis Center.
This result marked the Jaguars’ first loss of the season, moving their record to 6-1 overall.
In the doubles, the Nighthawks secured the single point by winning two of the three matches. UNG seniors Vaishali Jorge and Claudelle Labonté Frey defeated Augusta’s Claudia Borbon Roca and Teresa Franco Dias 6-3. AU freshman Julia De Macedo Moraes and senior Clara Bascunana deMiguel rebounded with a 4-3 victory over Johanna Lippert and Rafaella Villanueva. UNG junior Anna Markvartova and sophomore Svetlana Teterina defeated AU senior Edith Rueda Croda and freshman Lea Mocher 6-1.
For AU Coach Michael McGrath, this performance was indicative of how well the AU women’s tennis team has played all year.
“I though they played really well,” he said. “We had them on the ropes, but things didn’t work out in the end. That being said, I’m very pleased with how they’ve been playing all year.”
In the singles, Roca defeated Jorge 6-2, 6-7, and 6-1. Moraes won her singles match against Markvartova 6-4, 6-2. UNG’s Lippert defeated Croda 7-5, 6-3, Teterina defeated Dias 6-1, 6-2 and UNG senior Frey defeated deMiguel with scores of 6-1, 4-6, 5-4.
Lastly, the singles match between AU junior Carlota Costa Manero and Villanueva ended with match scores of 4-6, 7-6, and 2-2.
According to McGrath, there is still some work to be done before the next match.
“We just need to recover,” he said. “The match was played in very hot temperatures. It was very taxing for everyone involved, but we’ll have a light practice on Friday before the next match.”
AU’s next match will be against Barton College on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Petersburg Racquet Club. The match will begin at 2:30 p.m.
