AU volleyball wins first weekend match with USC Aiken in straight sets

Led by outside hitter Jazmyn Wheeler’s 14 kills and libero Kiera Barr’s 21 digs, the Augusta University volleyball team defeated USC Aiken in three sets on Friday, Sept. 23, at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Jaguars (3-1, 11-4) won by scores of 25-17, 26-24, 25-16. With the victory, AU moved into first place in the Peach Belt Conference. Lander is second at 5-2 and Georgia College third at 4-2.

Setter Samantha Zittrauer added 15 assists and four aces for AU. Outside hitter Kayli Cleaver had 10 kills, and setter Abigail Breeden led the way with 19 assists.

Augusta hit at a very strong .274 clip for the night. Wheeler, the transfer from Cal Poly Pomona and Phoenix, Ariz., led the way with 14 kills on 31 swings and only a single error.

Emily Lammers led the Pacers (1-3, 10-5) with 12 kills, followed by Sadie McKay with 11.

The two teams play again on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m. That match will also be at Christenberry.
