AU volleyball downs Georgia College in Halloween match
Staff report
Janvier Buggs had a career-high 45 assists and Jazmyn Wheeler totaled 15 kills to lead Augusta University to a straight-sets Peach Belt volleyball victory on Oct. 31 at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Augusta won 25-20, 25-15, 28-26 over the Bobcats to remain in second place in the PBC.
Kayli Cleaver added 14 kills and Savannah Davis nine for the Jaguars (7-1, 21-4). Davis added four blocks.
Dariana Luna chased down 24 digs and Wheeler had 14. Wheeler was named PBC player of the week the day before. Ally Thees had 12 digs and Buggs eight.
“I have to say that I am surprised I had so many assists being that it was only a three-set match, but ultimately I am proud of myself,” Buggs said.
Only the third set was tight, and that came to a battle of nerves and will. Cleaver and Kruczko, both of whom are from North Carolina, had late kills to seal the set and match.
Rachel Machovec led the Bobcats (1-8, 14-13) with 14 kills.
The Jaguars, who have won seven in a row and are attempting to win their second straight PBC regular-season crown, will host USC Aiken on Friday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m.
“I think we are physically fully prepared for our matches against USCA this weekend, but self-care and recovery are going to be vital to having a healthy mindset to close out our regular season,” Buggs said.
The showdowns with first-place Lander will be Nov. 9 and 10 (home and away, respectively). Lander is currently 8-0 in the conference (24-3 overall).
