AU Softball hosting open tryouts Sept. 7-8

The Augusta University softball team is holding open tryouts next Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 7-8 at Jaguar Field.

The Jaguars lost many of players in the offseason and several new players will have to step up in the upcoming spring season.

One of the key losses this offseason for the Jaguars was former AU freshman star pitcher Chloe Wilson. Wilson started 19 games last season for AU, leading the Jaguars in innings pitched last season, and had the second most strikeouts on the team.

“It’s always tough when you lose a player that played a key role and when the loss in unexpected, but people have to make tough decisions,” said AU softball head Coach Melissa Brocato.

The AU softball team has 11 new players and only nine returners this season. Even with all of the new faces, Brocato says she thinks the team has a lot of potential and is looking forward to all the new talent.

“We got a lot of new talented players that have came in, and I think we got a lot of potential to do well,” said Brocato.

While Brocato says the Jaguars have depth in most positions, she is hoping the team could possibly gain a pitcher in the tryouts.

“We could really use more pitching to have more numbers and depth at the position,” said Brocato. “We only have three pitchers right now. Everywhere else we have lots of depth, we always want to give everyone an opportunity if someone on campus can make us a better team, but I am really hoping we can gain a pitcher.”

Tryouts for the team will be held from 3:30 – 5:30p.m. both days and participants must be a full-time enrolled AU student and must have a current physical dated within the last six months. Jaguar Field is located on the Christenberry Fieldhouse campus.
