AU men have formidable lead heading to final round of SLC championship

Behind Stefan Jacobs’ 10-under-par 36-hole total, the Augusta University men held an 18-shot lead after the first two rounds of the Southland Conference tournament championship on April 26 in San Antonio, Texas.

Jacobs, a freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa, shot a 68 in the second round after an opening 66. He led Charlie Forster of Southeastern Louisiana by a single stroke entering the final round at the par-72 HIll Country Resort Golf Club course.

Jacobs was leading the entire field in his play on the Hill Country par-5 holes. He was 9 under par on those holes.

The Jaguars’ Behn Heyns was third at 3 under par, and teammate Ian Pienaar and Hampus Wijkstrom were tied for seventh at even par. CJ van Wyk is tied for 23rd to round out the AU scoring.

Under first-year coach Steven Paine, Augusta is at 13 under par. The Jaguars are on a quest for an automatic bid into the NCAA Division I regionals.

The University of New Orleans was in second place at 5 over par. Lamar is third at 6 over par.

The final round will be played Thursday, April 27.
