AU men and women’s tennis sweeps Benedict College

The Augusta University men and women’s tennis teams dominated Benedict College on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Newman Tennis Center, both winning by 7-0 match scores.

AU senior Ricard Rubio and sophomore Artur Abyan Davydovskiy won the first doubles match 6-3 for the men over Benedict’s Mark Chigaazira and Batsirai Saurombe. Senior Lucas Bolle and Daniel Szczupak followed them up with a 6-2 victory for the Jaguars over Richard Ngwarwi and Jason Chigaazira. AU junior Herick Isago and freshman Tanguy Calicis won the final doubles match over Divgurjot Singh and Jaylon Bokknight. 

In men singles, Rubio defeated Chigaazira 6-4, 6-4. Bolle defeated Saurombe by scores of 6-1 and 7-5. Szczupak won his first singles match of his career 6-0, 6-1 over Ngwarwi. Isago won his match 7-5, 6-4 against Singh. AU’s Quentin Cano Perez beat Chigaazira 6-2, 6-0, followed by Calicis dominating Bokknight 6-0, 6-0.

On the women’s side, AU senior Teresa Franco Dias and freshman Claudia Corbon Roca won their doubles matchup 6-1 against Esperance Follykoue and Patricia Wamba. Freshman Julia De Macedo Moraes and junior Carlota Costa Manero won 6-4 in the second doubles match over Sofia Gomez and Karina Izakova. Senior Edith Rueda Croda and freshman Lea Mocher defeated Shakendra Alston and Gabriela Zelaya 6-0.

In women’s singles, Roca defeated Wamba 6-0, 6-0. Moraes won 6-2, 6-2 over Follykoue in the second singles matchup. Croda won 6-0, 6-4 over Gomez. AU senior Clara Bascunana deMiguel defeated Izakova 6-3, 6-2. Manero won by scores 6-2, 6-0 over Alston, followed by Mocher, who won 6-2, 6-0 over Olivia Simms in the final match of the day.

AU men and women’s tennis next matches will be on Sunday, Feb. 6, against Converse University at Newman Tennis Center.
