The Graduate School at Augusta University hosted a virtual fair for students to learn more about the school, specific programs, how to be a competitive graduate applicant and the changes the Corona virus made to the application process.

Because of the coronavirus, some programs are waving GRE requirements for spring and or fall applicants. For program specific requirements, please go to https://www.augusta.edu/gradschool/.

The fair was split into several sessions. The first was about being a competitive graduate applicant and was moderated by Dr. Jennifer Sullivan, the Interim Dean of the Graduate School. She was accompanied by several professors who gave advice and answered student questions.

Dr. Pamela Cook, interim associate dean, told students to know why they are applying to program. What do you want to do in the program and what do you want to get out of it? Not only that, but why are you a good fit for the program? In the interview process, the interviewer will have questions for you, but Dr. Sabina Widner said, “It really looks bad if you don’t have any questions.”

Dr. Cook reinforced the importance of being an informed applicant throughout the session.

Communication was an important factor for many of the panelists. The professors want the applicants to reach out and ask questions. It is important to start building relationships with the professors in your program, and can start before you turn your application in.

Following the panel of professors was a panel of students moderated by Dr. Patricia Cameron, vice dean of the graduate school.

The advice given by students mirrored that of the professors. The students said communicate, ask questions, be an involved applicant because it makes you stand out.

After the two sessions, each program had a private session for students who are interested in applying to specific programs.
