It’s that time of year now where the weather is warming up and starting to feel like springtime.
With that, comes baseball season, and the Jaguars opened up their conference schedule taking the series, 2-1, over Georgia College.
The open was on Saturday, March 2, pushed back from Friday because of weather. This one didn’t go well for AU as they were shut out, 10-0.
They went into the doubleheader on Sunday, March 3, looking to score some runs and hold down the Bobcat bats on the mound.
Through timely hitting, including a five-run first inning, the Jaguars won the second game of the series, 11-8.
Senior Britt Kelly picked up the win in relief. The left-handed hurler threw 3 and one-third innings, allowing one hit and no runs.
Parker Ingram hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to give the Jaguars the lead.
In game three, the Jaguars (2-1, 10-9) went with graduate student Will Cantrell on the mound. He went 4 and one-third innings and struck out five batters.
Augusta jumped out to a 3-0 lead in this, then fell behind 5-3 in the fifth inning.
Things didn’t stay that way for long as the Jaguars busted across for six runs in the sixth inning. The big shot was a grand slam off the bat of catcher Kyle Laroche.
Logan Howell came in and slammed the door. He threw three innings, allowing two runs and picking up the save.
After the series win, the Jaguars sit tied for second place in the conference. They will host Emory & Henry on Wednesday, March 6 at 3:00 p.m. for their next game. Their next conference series is at Lander University, March 8-10.
Jaguar softball team takes one of three from Hurricanes
Meanwhile, the AU softball squad only managed to get one win in the series against Georgia Southwestern.
In game one of the series, they battled hard, tying the game at 4-4 in the third on an error by GSW. The Jaguars couldn’t find a way and fell in the end 7-4 to the Hurricanes.
Game two was quite the matchup as it went 12 innings with the teams tied at 3. Nothing changed until the 12th inning when Bailee Roberts belted a walk-off solo home run, her third hit of the day.
The Jaguars went on to drop the third game of the set, 8-0.
They played host to Lees-Mcrae on Monday, March 4, for a double-header. AU Softball currently sits in fifth place in the conference.
