Augusta University, Augusta Technical College and Paine College came together to celebrate the life, legacy and birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 13.
The annual celebration was held at Paine College’s Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel.
Lewis V. Baldwin, a professor of religious studies at Vanderbilt University was this year’s keynote speaker. Baldwin, a native of Camden, Ala., is the author of several publications on race studies and the life of King, who was an ordained minister. Baldwin is also the recipient of the American Theological Association Award and the Midwest Book Achievement Award of the Midwest Independent Publishers Association.
“When we think of Dr. King, we recall the life of such broad grandeurs....of passion, discipline, dedication, discernment, and achievement,” Baldwin said. “We have a moral responsibility to build on Dr. King’s legacy.”
Brooks Keel, president of Augusta University, Jermain Whirl, president of Augusta Technical College and Cheryl Evans Jones, president of Paine College all spoke at the event. Augusta’s Mayor Garnett Johnson sent a representative to appear at the celebration.
A combined choir of students from the colleges sang hymns accompanied by Rosalyn W. Ford, a professor of piano at Augusta University.
