The Dental College of Georgia Molar Bears defeated Phi Delta Theta 38-12 in the Augusta University intramural flag football championship game on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Jaguar Park.
The flag football league included 12 teams and took place from Sept. 13 through Oct. 13.
The league teams included various fraternities as well as some of the health science colleges at the university. The rest of the teams were constructed from free agents and friend groups who wanted to participate.
Games took place Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, spanning from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. There was a regular season that started on Sept. 13 and ended on Oct. 4. This was followed by a postseason that took place Oct. 11-13.
The DCG Molar Bears, composed of dental school students, dominated the regular season and postseason.
The Molar Bears went undefeated in the regular season and postseason, going 6-0 and averaging the most points per game at 35, while allowing the fewest points per game at 9 and having the highest point differential in the league of 168. The Molars Bears won their semifinal game 48-6. They followed that up by dominating the championship game, winning by 26 points.
The captain of the team was Gray King, a dental school student at AU, who talked about team chemistry.
“We all are in our second year of dental school and to my knowledge I don't think anyone knew each other before we got here and over the past year,” King said. “We’ve all become friends and threw a little team together.”
King became the captain of the team because he played wide receiver at Auburn from 2013 to 2015 (the Tigers made it to the national title game in 2013 before losing to Florida State). The Molar Bears looked to him for his experience, and this helped the team put up such a dominating showing in the league.
“Some people were probably thinking we were taking it a little too seriously,” King said. “I went through and found old playbooks and was drawing plays up, and we had armbands and we were calling plays on offense the whole time. Then on defense we were trying to do some tricky blitzes and some more difficult things that some of the other teams didn't really know how to handle, and because of that we got to win the championship.”
The DCG Molar Bears were ecstatic to win the championship given all the work they put into the season.
“It feels good,” King said. “We didn’t get to play last year because of COVID. We have a bunch of good athletes in our class, and so we were all looking forward to playing this year and it feels good to win.”
Another DCG team member with past football experience is Thomas Marchman, who played at Mercer. Jacob Bass played baseball at Newberry, and Sam Jackson’s brother (Dan Jackson) is playing for top-ranked UGa. now.
Augusta University’s intramural sports coordinator Bryan Waller spoke about the season and completing it successfully after COVID-19,
“It feels good to be back doing contact sports because the students didn’t have much to look forward to last semester, and this semester the turnout was really good.” Waller said.
Waller also talked about the student engagement from the players and fans alike.
“The coolest thing that I see, and I love, is different colleges coming out and cheering for their respective teams,” Waller said. “That was something that was missing last year, that human touch type connection and it's good to see that camaraderie and that friendship and bond develop.”
The flag football season concluded alongside the co-rec volleyball season that saw the 6-0 Kefe team defeat Dig Boy Dig 2-1 in the championship round.
The next intramural sport on the schedule is a table tennis tournament on Oct. 21. This will be followed by a 3-on-3 basketball tournament that will start on Oct. 25. Both are open to all AU students who want to watch or participate. For more information, email Waller at bwaller@augusta.edu.
