By Alexis Parr |ContributorStudent organization leaders at Augusta University gave back to students by providing an afternoon of food, games and appreciation. Members associated with any of the 170 organizations on campus were invited to attend the Appreciation Day in the Jaguar Student Activity Center’s Breezeway on the Summerville campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 7 in recognition of their support, leadership and involvement. This event was made possible by the student activity fees paid by every student who attends the university.Appreciation Day was conducted by the coordinator of the Greek life organizations, Carolyn Zoerb, and her graduate assistant, Leslie Dodson. Their focus was to show appreciation for involved students and encourage other students to join in order to develop various skills, understandings and to meet people with similar interests.“You’re only in college for about four years,” Dodson said. “You can make mistakes and triumphs. So, why not?”The coordinators encouraged students to join because they believe that involvement will improve student life and help build lifelong connections.“Being involved is important because it gives students a well-rounded college experience.” AU alumnus Ming Chen said. “I got involved because I was bored in class and I wanted to explore my interests while making new friends that felt the same way.”Chen continues to be involved with the university after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and helped direct the games that were available. Activities for this event included a T-shirt giveaway, Jenga, Connect Four and a poster signing. There also was free food.Registration for these organizations is free and available to any students that are interested. The first step is to research by going to the school’s website and attend the meetings.Contact Alexis Parr at aparr@augusta.edu
