By Madison Brown |Online/Design EditorThe Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man in connection with the assault of an Augusta University physician on March 15.According to the RCSO, the suspect is described a black male, approximately 5-foot-10 and between 180 and 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and dark-colored pants.The victim was attacked in her apartment and was taken to AU Medical Center with serious injuries. The victim, whose latest condition has not been released by the authorities, was found bound and gagged by police after she was able to get to her phone and used FaceTime to contact an acquaintance.The crime took place at Colonial Court, 2549 Walton Way. The residence is across the street from AU’s Summerville Campus, near both Arsenal Avenue and Monte Sano Avenue.A resident who lives near the complex said the incident was nerve-racking.“It made me nervous because I live there and my family lives there,” said the resident, who asked not to be identified. “We’ve lived there for a long time and we’ve always tried to be safe.”AU President Brooks A. Keel addressed the situation in an email sent to the entire university.“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family,” President Keel wrote. “At this time, we are focused on doing whatever we can to support her and other members of our community who have been affected by this act of violence.”In response to the crime, AU Police said they are increasing their patrols in the area. This included police riding bicycles.Officers for the RCSO, who believe it was likely a crime of opportunity, are asking anyone with information about the crime to call (706) 721-2911.
