By Skyler Mitchell |Staff writerClubs are a prevalent part of college life, where people are able to make connections and make new friends with similar interests. For the creative writers at Augusta University, the Creative Writing Club is their chance to join one.The Creative Writing Club met for the first time this semester on Jan. 24 in Allgood Hall to discuss what they plan to do for the new year. Club President John Babatope already has a few ideas on what he wants to do, especially since this is his first year as president. Babatope hopes that this year will be a good one for the writing club and wants to live up to the goals he has set in place for it.“We hope to build a community of writers and also improve our writing skills as well,” said Babatope when questioned about the main goals of the club. The club also plans to give club members experience in giving and receiving constructive feedback, along with dealing with deadlines for writing. The club is also run by faculty members Ana Harris-Parker and James Minick, who both teach creative writing or communications. There is also Vice President Logan Eidson, who was voted into the position during the meeting. They all share the same goals as Babatope and want to see the Creative Writing Club thrive with new members.“I like sharing my work,” said Logan Edson when he introduced himself in the beginning of the meeting. “I also like getting feedback so I can improve as a writer.”The club mainly focuses on analyzing each other’s work and talking about literature. It is encouraged to bring multiple copies of a piece of writing so that multiple members can give feedback. The limit is four pages, double-spaced, but exceptions can be made if you inform a professor. Debates on literature is much vaguer, as it will pertain to all forms of literature. This will be done every official meeting every month until the month of April. The Creative Writing Club is also doing an ambitious project this year with its new members. For this year, the Creative Writing Club is writing a collaborative short story, with each member getting assigned a part of the story to write. Along with the other club activities, the club will officially meet each month to discuss the progress made and what needs to be done next. There are also unofficial meeting times that will be made by the members so they can work together outside of official meeting times. The club currently has seven members as of now but are welcoming anyone to join. There are no prerequisites to join, the only requirement being a love for literature and being able to work with a group. The group meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month and is taking members up until March. For people who would like to join, they should contact professors Anna Harris-Parker and James Minick at their official emails, aharrisparker@augusta.edu and jminick@augusta.edu. Or show up at the next club meeting, which is being held on Feb. 28, the location is currently TBA. Contact Skyler Mitchell at skmitchell@augusta.edu
