Staff report |The Augusta University men's basketball team received 23 points and 11 rebounds from senior Rafael Monteiro as the Jags downed Clayton State 98-81 in Morrow on Saturday, Jan. 4, in a Peach Belt Conference contest.The Jaguars (3-0, 8-3) also received 15 points and 11 boards from sophomore Tyshaun Crawford. Troy Cracknell and Miguel Arnold added 12 points each for AU, which made 9-of-17 three-pointers. Darren Lucas-White chipped in nine points, five rebounds and three steals.Augusta built a 52-28 lead and never looked back. The offense clicked all night long as AU shot 59 percent overall. The Jags also won the boards battle by 25-16.All of the Jaguars played, and Lee Flenor and Jack Johnson both scored six points off the bench.Kyle Kincey led Clayton State (0-3, 2-8) with 22 points, and Bryan Hart contributed 16. The Lakers only shot 37 percent from the field and just 26 percent from behind the arc.In the women's game, Augusta, behind Kiera Howard. registered a 95-81 triumph in double overtime. The Jaguars (3-0, 6-5) were led by Howard's 32 points, six steals and three assists. Howard also made all nine of her free throws. Asia Harrison added 19 points, and Kennedi Manning and Jaelyn Autman ech had 10 for AU.The Jags trailed by four entering the final quarter, but the visitors outscored the Lakers 23-19 to force the first extra period. Both teams only scored four points in the first overtime, but AU went on a 20-6 run in the second OT.Augusta shot 44 percent, compared to 37 percent for Clayton State (2-1, 6-5). The Jags forced 31 Laker turnovers.Taneria Wilson led Clayton State with 20 points, followed by Timi'A Swanson with 18 points and eight rebounds.Both AU teams will play at Lander on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The women start at 5:30 p.m., and the men tip off at 7:30.
