AU cross country men and Weathers to compete in nationals in California

By Carlos Rodriguez |Sports writerThe Augusta University men’s cross country team and Micah Weathers of the women's team will race at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 23, in the NCAA Division II National Championships. After a sixth-place finish for the women at the Southeast Regional, Weathers, a junior, qualified individually for the national championship for the first time in her career after finishing third.“I’ve never experienced a race to this magnitude,” Weathers said. “I feel really grateful and blessed for this opportunity.”Weathers goal is to place in the top 40 to achieve All-American honors.“My race is dependent on me actively choosing to stay strong and wanting the best time and place," she said.AU Coach Adam Ward is very proud of Weathers and is confident in her abilities.“Micah is such a tough and amazing competitor,” Ward said. “She has the potential to be our first ever all-American. I’m looking forward to watching her perform.”The men, who automatically qualified after placing second at the Southeast Regional, look to improve their 28th-place performance from last years championship. In 2017 the Jags placed 23rd, which currently stands as the highest place in school history for the men. After their regional performance, the men were ranked 16th in the national coaches poll, moving up eight spots from their previous 24th ranking. This is the highest the team has ever been ranked. At the regional, six of the men earned all-Regional honors. Junior Jacob Poston was the highest finisher for the Jags coming in second. Junior brothers Chase and Chandler Kennedy finished fourth and seventh respectfully. Rounding out the top five were junior Hunter Kimball finishing 14th and grad Jacob Burgamy taking 20th. Sophomore Hans Troyer was the sixth Jag named all-Regional after finishing 24th and sophomore Kai Brickey was one spot off all-Regional finishing 26th.Out of the seven runners, two of them, Burgamy and Chase Kennedy, are transfers. The came from Division I schools Campbell and Kennesaw State, respectively.“They gave us depth and closed gaps,” Ward said. “Those guys challenged our returnees and helped us up front.”Ward also noted how some of the younger guys on the team have developed from last season. Along with Kennedy and Burgamy, Kai Brickey will be racing in his first national championship. For Troyer and Chandler Kennedy, this will be their second time racing in the NCAA Championship. Kimball and Poston are the only members of the team that will compete in their third consecutive NCAA championship.“This is by far the best team to come through the school,” Kimball said. “I think we should be able to have three to four All-Americans.”Ward believes the team is capable of a finish inside the top 10.“If they can be patient and execute a sound race strategy, I believe they can,” Ward said. The women’s 6K will start at 1 p.m. (EST) and the men’s 10K will follow after at 2:15 p.m. (EST). The event will be broadcasted on FloTrack along with live results on NCAA.com. Contact Carlos Rodriguez at carlosjr521@gmail.com.
