AU women bounce back and defeat Southern Wesleyan; to host Queens in home opener

By Cameron Windley |Sports writerAfter an ugly loss against Barton College on Nov. 8, the Augusta Lady Jags bounced back on Nov. 9 against Southern Wesleyan with a 55-43 win.This game was a test to see how the Jags would rebound from an ugly loss against Barton the previous night, and they proved that against Southern Wesleyan. Both teams were evenly matched as they were tied 12-12 after the first quarter. The Jags played really stingy defense and dominated in the second quarter.The Jags led 23-12 at the half. Southern Wesleyan outscored the Jags 17-13 in the third quarter, but the Jags bounced back in the fourth quarter with their own fury as they put up 19 points in the fourth quarter to close out the game.Zairya West led the Jags in scoring with 13 points, including 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. Kiera Howard dropped in 12 points, and she had six points from the free throw line.The Jags improve to 1-1 and Southern Wesleyan dropped to 0-3 in the early season. Barton had beaten the Jags 77-33 in the season opener.“Every loss is a lesson, and we have to come prepared mentally," AU Coach Millette Green said.Augusta will play its first home game Saturday, Nov. 16, against Queens University from North Carolina at 5:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse. Queens enters the game with an 0-3 record and is coming off a 68-57 loss to Lees-McRae on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The Royals are led by Kristian Eanes, who averages 14.3 points per game. Jaymi Golden is next with a 12.7 average.Howard has been the scoring leader for AU with 10.5 points per game.
