By Leeroy Francis Jr. |Sports editorThe Augusta University Jaguars men's and women's basketball teams host crosstown-rival USC Aiken on Wednesday, Jan. 30, for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. and men at 7:30 p.m.The men's contest is a showdown between league leader USC Aiken (11-1 in the PBC, 17-1 overall), which is ranked sixth in the nation in Division II, and second-place AU (9-2, 13-4).The Jaguars are getting in their groove, winning four straight and seven of their last eight contests. Coach Dip Metress's team continue to be a force to deal with at Christenberry Fieldhouse, where the Jaguars boast an 8-1 record.The Jaguars lead the Peach Belt Conference in defense, only allowing an average of 71.2 points per game, and the Jaguars also lead the PBC in field goal percentage at 48.6 percent. Junior Rafael Montiero leads the team with 14.9 points per game, and senior Deane Williams leads the team in rebounds at 9.1 per game.On the other side of the Savannah River, the USC Aiken Pacers are making noise nationally in Division II Basketball. The conference-leading Pacers are ranked third in the PBC in points per game, averaging 89.2.The Pacers are led by junior Ty'lik Evans, who scored a career-high 31 points in a four-point win over Clayton State on Jan. 19. Evans also leads the PBC in three-pointers made with 60 through 18 games this season.The Jaguar women (3-8, 4-13) are on a mini-run of their own, having won two of their last three outings.Wednesday night will also be "Greek Life Night with the Jags," in which AU sororities and fraternities will be in attendance to support the teams.
