Jags notch 85-73 PBC hoops win over North Georgia

Staff report |Freshman Tyree Myers continued his excellent play and led Augusta University to an 85-73 win over North Georgia at Christenberry Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 19.Against UNG, Myers matched his career high of 21 points, which he had set in a 93-88 loss against UNC Pembroke on Jan. 15. Myers had not missed a single shot that evening and was 8 of 9 against the Nighthawks in Saturday's Peach Belt Conference victory. Additionally, the Baltimore, Md., product made 3-of-4 foul shots and had two assists and three steals."It's just confidence," Myers said of his offensive efficiency. "I'm shooting with confidence, and I am taking the shots I need to take."Myers got plenty of help from seniors Tyvez Monroe and Deane Williams. Monroe had 16 points on the night when he was 4 of 6 from behind the three-point line. Monroe also had five rebounds. Williams totaled 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots, and two steals for the Jaguars (6-2 in the conference, 10-4 overall). Two more Jags were in double figures; Miguel Arnold scoring 12 points and Rafael Monteiro ending with 10.AU shot 57 percent, compared to 48 percent for the visitors, who were led by Shawn Hopkins with 20, Zach Contrell with 14 and Zezmon Steeple with 12."We were disappointed with our defensive performance," Williams said. "On the other hand, if you can play defense like that and still win games, then the sky is the limit for us."The Jaguars only missed one of 17 free throw attempts all night, and that came when Myers missed with just 37.9 seconds left."We were disappointed in the way we played, but that was a good result," AU Coach Metress said afterwards. "We weren't sharp, but in the words of a former NBA player, Paul Silas, it's one on the left side of the column. It's a win."The Jaguars built a 12-point lead in the first half, although the Nighthawks (1-7, 6-8) cut the advantage to 44-37 by the break. North Georgia edged within five with the first basket of the second half, only to see AU go on a 23-11 run to blow the game open.The Jaguars avenged a 65-62 loss at North Georgia on Dec. 19.In the women's game, No. 20 North Georgia won 77-56 behind 26 points from Tamera Thorpe and 20 from Julianne Sutton. Cameryn Wilson and Kiera Howard each scored 11 for the Jaguars (1-7, 2-12). The Nighthawks (7-1, 12-2) took control of the game with a 31-11 third quarter.AU will host Young Harris on Monday, Jan. 21. The women will start at 1:30 p.m. and the men at 3:30.
