By Leeroy Francis Jr. |Sports editorBroc Everett, who claimed the 2018 NCAA Division I men's golf individual championship in May, has been named the Bell Ringer Media male athlete of the year for Augusta University.A tall left-hander, Everett led the Jaguar men with a stroke average of just under 72 and posted eight rounds in the 60s. The West Des Moines, Iowa, product had six top-five finishes and led the Jaguars to an improbable top-four final in the regionals, thus earning the team a spot in the national championship at Stillwater, Okla.There, at Oklahoma State University's course, the Jaguar graduate student beat Auburn's Brandon Macheno on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff after both finished the 72-hole tournament at 7 under par. Everett birdied the playoff hole while the Auburn freshman parred.It marked the first individual golf national championship in AU history. The Jaguars won the team championship in 2010 and 2011. Everett also led the Jaguars to the MEAC championship.Others in the running for the men's award were Hunter Kimball (cross country), T.C. Fields (basketball) and Deane Williams (basketball). Kimball earned all-conference and all-region honors and finished 55th in the national championship race in Pittsburgh. That was the highest finish in the national title meet ever by a Jaguar cross country runner. Fields also earned all-conference and all-region honors while leading the Jaguars in scoring. The Aquinas High School product went on to play for the Augusta 706ers professional team and was their leading scorer before the team folded. Williams ranked fourth in the Peach Belt Conference in rebounding and led the Jaguars in rebounding and blocked shots. He was also named to the preseason all-conference team for 2018-2019.On the women's side, the Bell Ringer named McKenzey Beck of the volleyball team as the athlete of the year. She was all-Peach Belt and all-region. Beck, who was MVP of the Peach Belt Tournament, led the Jaguars in triple-doubles. She led the Jaguars to the conference tournament championship.Also receiving votes were Micah Weathers (cross country), Chloe Allen (volleyball) and Savannah Gonzalez (volleyball). Weathers was an all-conference selection and finished fifth in the Peach Belt finals despite running with a nagging injury. Allen was second team all-conference and an honorable mention all-region performer who was second in the league in block assists. Gonzalez, who was named to the conference all-academic team, finished with more than 1,000 career kills.Other awards given by the Bell Ringer sports staff are as follows: Georgia male athlete of the year, Josef Martinez (MVP of MLS champion Atlanta Utd.); Georgia female athlete of the year, Elana Meyers Taylor (silver medalist on the U.S. Bobsled Team); U.S. male athlete of the year, Kevin Durant (helped lead Golden State Warriors to the NBA title); U.S. female athlete of the year, Breanna Stewart (led Seattle Storm to WNBA title); world male athlete of the year, Eliud Kipchoge (Kenyan marathoner who broke the world record at the Berlin Marathon); and world female athlete of the year, Simone Biles (who won the world all-around title for USA Gymnastics).The selections were made by members of the Sports Communication class at Augusta University.
