Lady Jaguars beat Paine College, 69-52, for first win of young hoops season

By Brandon Johnson |ContributorThe Augusta University Lady Jaguars got their first win of the season on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the HEAL Complex, toppling Paine by a score of 69-52.Starting senior forward Moneisha Goldsborough led the AU charge with 14 points and four rebounds, and freshman guard Asia Harrison added 14 points, five rebounds and two steals in 28 minutes. Harrison came off the bench for Augusta.On the opposing side, freshman guard Ebony Chisolm was the only one to contribute double-digit points with 11.The Jaguars were able to maintain the lead for the entirety of the game because of their defensive intensity. AU caused Paine to turn over the ball 23 times and held Paine to a 36-percent shooting night from the field.Jaguars Coach Millette Green was pleased with the way the Jags played against the Lions.“I thought we played great as a unit today," she said. "We came off the bench at the start of the game and elevated our play. On the defensive end, we were excellent tonight. That’s something to build upon.”Augusta shot 42 percent from the floor overall, 35 percent on three-pointers and 71 percent from the free-throw line.“On the offensive end, we shot the ball well enough," Green said.Prior to the game against the Lions, the Jags were in search of their first win after they had came up short in their first two home games with losses against Barton (89-46) and Southern Wesleyan (78-68).Green, the second-year AU coach, was happy with the Lady Jaguars' first win of the season.“The energy in the locker room is good for the team," Green said. "The young kids now know how it feels. They got a taste of winning, and everybody played a part in the win tonight.”The Lady Jaguars will host Benedict College at 5:30 p.m. at Christenberry Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
