By Tracy Tamplin |ContributorAugusta University’s Creative Writing Club meets every fourth Monday at Allgood Hall in the English and Foreign Languages Conference Room (E227) from 2 to 4 p.m.The meetings are open to the public and tend to be more like a workshop, according to the president, Logan Edison. He said club meetings are a mix of book discussions and hanging out with those who love writing.“The goal of our meetings is to create community amongst writers, so we have group-based discussions and workshop,” Logan said.A workshop is when a writer brings in a piece of work and has someone read it. The reader will critique and help the writer understand what is going on with what they are working on or provide a helpful clue on what to explain or express better. Edison said think of a workshop for writing like an art project. The artist on the work for a while shows it to a friend and the friend says it looks good but if you add this to it, it will look much better.“I enjoy all the Creative Writing Club meetings,” Edison said. “Reading other people’s works and seeing perspectives different than my own is my favorite thing about being in a community of writers.”The faculty sponsor of the club is Jim Minick, who teaches the creative non-fiction classes along with the introduction to creative writing in the Department of English and Foreign Languages at AU.Students do not have to arrive to meetings on time or stay the whole time; it is just a good way for a student to join a community of fellow writers. Writer’s bring a few poems or four pages of something else and enjoy the community of fellow writers.
