Jags' volleyball team improves to 17-4 with two road victories

By Ceara Hester |ContributorAfter winning two away matches against Limestone and Belmont Abbey last week, Augusta University’s volleyball team now stands 17-4.The Lady Jags began the week with a non-conference game against Limestone on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Augusta swept passed the Saints in the first two sets with final scores 25-18 and 25-14. Limestone kicked it up a notch in the last set, but the Jaguars stayed on their toes and won the final set 25-23.Senior outside-hitter Savanna Gonzales led the team with 10 kills, and junior setter Cheryke Brian-Garmos led in assists with 18. The Jags had a strong advantage against Limestone in hitting percentages in the first two sets with .292 and .407 versus the Saints’ .038 and .088. After the competition intensified in the third set, the gap was smaller at .229 for AU and .211 for Limestone.On Saturday, Oct. 13, Augusta traveled to Belmont, N.C., to play Belmont Abbey in a four-set match. The first two sets ended in scores of 27-25 and 25-27 with the Jaguars taking the first. The teams were close to even with hitting percentages of .243 and .167 for the Lady Jags and .286 and .119 for the Knights. During the last sets, AU won 25-18 and 25-23 to take home their 17th win of the season against just four losses.Gonzales led again in kills after posting 14 for the home team and Brian-Garmos had 28 assists. Senior setter McKenzey Beck, who was named PBC specialist of the week, was close to getting her fifth triple-double of the season after having nine kills, 13 assists and 15 digs against the Knights.The next match for the Lady Jags will be a conference match against Georgia College on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Christenberry Fieldhouse, followed by a conference match at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Flagler College.Update: AU lost to Georgia College in straight sets on Oct. 16.
