By Ceara Hester |ContributorFor the first time since 2012, Augusta University earned a clean 3-0 sweep over rival USC Aiken on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 6. Indeed, the Jaguars had not won against the Pacers in three years, but the host Jaguars played hard and took home the win in the Peach Belt match at Christenberry Fieldhouse. It was Aiken's first conference loss of the season.“Especially when they stick their flag on our campus. You know? To claim their territory. Oh, heck no,” said AU Coach Sharon Quarles on the Pacers' leaving their school flag at the Summerville campus earlier in the week.Coach Quarles had been honored on Friday night before the match for her 400th career win, which took place on Sept. 21 against Flagler. She received a plaque and a volleyball signed by her team. Since winning her 400th match, Quarles has led the team to four more victories.Coming off a 3-1 loss to Lander University on Friday night, the team worked on their blocking and setting to improve for Saturday’s match. After winning the first set 27-25 against Lander, AU fell victim to their second conference match loss. During this match, though, senior setter McKenzey Beck earned her fourth triple-double of the season with 14 kills, 17 assists and 15 digs, but her play was not enough to secure the win for the Jaguars. When the Lady Jags hit the court on Saturday, they took note on what went wrong the night before and played stronger and cleaner. They won an easy first set 25-14, but the Pacers stepped up their game during the next two sets to make things tougher for the home team. Augusta just barely won the last two sets with final scores of 26-24 and 32-30, the longest set so far this season for the Jaguars.“The last set was long," said junior middle blocker Jessica Hedrick. "We play a game in practice where we don’t know the score and we just have to play and it forces us to play hard at every point and go all out. I just think we needed to capitalize a little bit earlier in the set so we wouldn’t have gotten to the point of playing until it was 32-30, but it worked out okay.”Senior outside-hitter Savanna Gonzales posted 11 kills for the Jaguars while Hedrick was behind her with 10. McKenzey Beck led with 16 assists and freshman middle-hitter Victoria Wade played one of her best games so far contributing six kills for Augusta (4-2, 15-4).“I’m just happy I could help out the team and do as much as I could for them. It’s fantastic," Wade said. "I feel great.”AU will visit USC Aiken (4-1, 14-3) on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. for the re-match.Beck was named specialist of the week by the conference after notching two triple-doubles.The next match for Augusta is Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Limestone College. The next home match will be Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. against Georgia College.Update: AU defeated Limestone in straight sets. Scores were 25-18, 25-14 and 25-23.
