By Jordan Stenger |Senior Staff WriterAugusta University’s Summerville campus is screening Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda as its first film of September’s Cinema Series schedule.Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda will be screened in the Maxwell theatre on Thursday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.The film centers on the life and art of Ryuichi Sakamoto a prominent Japanese musician.Director of the film, Stephen Nomura Schible created this film to share the story of Ryuichi Sakamoto and show his creative process, and his music as is shaped by his life experiences, in particular, his activism as an opponent of nuclear power.Schible said, “The mainstream Japanese media, which otherwise follows Ryuichi’s career very ardently, was reluctant to touch his activism in depth.”Matthew Buzzell, director of the Cinema Series and professor of Communication, is especially excited for this film to be shown.“Mr. Sakamoto is a very unique artist in that he is able to balance not just being a pianist and a composer for both film and a variety of different forms of popular music, but he’s also a very thoughtful environmentally mindful person,” he said.Come and enjoy a film that captures the creative process of a well-known artist as well as his role in advocating for causes he believed in.
