Sports roundup: Dawgs getting closer to Tigers in AP poll

Staff report |Georgia, coming off its convincing 41-17 win at South Carolina on Sept. 8, remained third in the Associated Press college football poll, but the Bulldogs moved  closer to Clemson, which edged Texas A&M 28-27 on the road. The Tigers had 1,430 votes in the weekly poll, compared to 1,407 for Kirby Smart's UGa. team. Alabama remains first and Ohio State is fourth. In other sports news: 

  • Aaron Rodgers came back from a knee injury and rallied the Green Bay Packers to a 24-23 win over the Chicago Bears. Green Bay trailed 20-0 at halftime after Rodgers suffered an apparent left knee injury in the first half. He threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns. Khalil Mack was also a beast for the Bear’s defense by forcing a fumble and scoring a pick-six of his own. Mack became the first player since 1982 to record a sack, interception, touchdown, forced fumble and fumble recovery in one half ...
  • Mayor E. Ben Zahn III in Kenner, La., has banned Nike products from city recreation facilities. On the other hand, Nike's online sales increased 31 percent last week. Meanwhile, the College of the Ozarks, a private college in Missouri, is stripping athletes of Nike gear over the Colin Kaepernick-centered ad campaign. The school president stated, “in their new ad campaign, we believe Nike executives are promoting an attitude of division and disrespect toward America." And Miami's Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson carried Kaepernick’s torch by continuing to kneel during the national anthem. On the women's side, 20th-seeded Naomi Osaka of Japan beat No. 17 Serena Williams in straight sets to win her first grand slam title. This final will be remembered for Williams clashing with chair umpire Carlos Ramos in Arthur Ashe Stadium.   • Derrick Loccident of the Central Oklahoma football team lost his foot when he was run over by a train. Oklahoma City police said Loccident, 20, was trying to crawl under a stopped train when the train started moving. Police said the train severed Loccident's foot, but he was able to flag down a nearby person who took him to a hospital. Police say he is expected to survive ...
