Fans of the House of Mouse visit La Chat Noir

By Trey Nevard |Contributor Local Disney fans were treated to a trivia contest on Aug. 31, thanks to a collaboration between local arthouse theater, La Chat Noir, and the CSRA’s local trivia contest kingpin, Mike Sleeper.'Trivia with Mike Sleeper' travels to different areas around the CSRA with various trivia contests, sometimes with different themes. On Aug. 31, for La Chat Noir’s “Last Friday Trivia,” Sleeper’s theme was Disney films. The questions ranged from relatively easy to exceptionally difficult, with enough of a variety of formatting to keep things interesting.Fans came together in numerous groups (team names are optional, but encouraged) and worked together. Teams are given sixty seconds to answer each question. Each group was given specially marked note cards to write down their answers and turn them in. Each team that got the answer right would get a point. On top of the main questions, there are also a few additional types. For this event, there was a “Name that Song” portion, where fans would listen to snippets of various Disney songs and have to name both the song and the film that it originated from. The songs were played at three different moments in the contest, with a longer portion of the song being played each time. The group that turned their answers in the earliest received the most points. There was also a question that was available on the official Facebook event page. This was the only question fans are allowed to use the internet on. In this event’s case, the question was, “Which live-action Disney film was released first: Mary Poppins, or Swiss Family Robinson?” (The answer was Swiss Family Robinson). The final question of the night was one where the teams could bet some or all of their points. Teams would turn in a card with the amount they were betting before the question was asked (if a team did not turn in a bet, Sleeper took it to mean all or nothing). After the question was answered, the top five winning teams were recognized.Sleeper has been running 'Trivia with Mike Sleeper' for about nine years. Sleeper said that he looks for themes that people seem to enjoy. ,He said, “I choose themes that everybody loves, and Disney is one of the most popular themes. If I do Disney, Friends, Harry Potter, or Marvel, people flock.”The schedule for Sleeper’s plans for trivia for the two weeks after the event (from Sept. 3 to the 13) is on the official Trivia with Mike Sleeper Facebook page. They meet at various places. According to Sleeper, September’s “Last Friday Trivia” at La Chat Noir will be themed after the 1990’s sitcom, Friends(Disclaimer: This is a story about an event that happened on Aug. 31. We apologize for it going up late.)
