By Ceara Hester |ContributorAugusta defeated Shorter University on Tuesday night, Sept. 4, by a 3-1 count at Christenberry Fieldhouse. It was the seventh win for the Lady Jags this season in eight outings, but it started out a little rough for the home team.During the first set, AU was ahead of the game until Shorter fought back and tied the set 11-11. The match continued to stay even, but it was Shorter who took home the win with a set score of 25-23.Coach Sharon Quarles said it was a wake-up call losing the first set.“We cannot be that casual on every ball,” she said. “We need to step up with a sense of urgency from point of serve to point awarded. We have to play our best ball and every contact has got to be the best contact.”The Jaguars came back fighting and proceeded to dominate the last three sets with final scores of 25-12, 25-8, and 25-14. Senior setter McKenzey Beck got her second triple-double with 16 assists, 13 digs, and 10 kills, while senior outside hitter Savanna Gonzalez contributed 12 kills and 10 digs for the team. Cheryke Brian-Garmos led the team with 25 assists along with 12 digs.This weekend Augusta will play at the Augusta/USC Aiken Tournament at the Christenberry Fieldhouse. Their first match will be at 7 p.m. Friday, September 7, against Catawba followed by two matches on Saturday.
