Vice Provost for Instruction at Augusta University Zach Kelehear has been named interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs starting Aug. 31.

Kelehear will replace outgoing Provost Gretchen Caughman, who is retiring at the end of August. Caughman had planned to retire June 30, but has stayed on as the university helping plan for the Fall 2020 semester as AU has dealt with the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Kelehear has been a part of AU since 2015. He previously worked with the University of South Carolina, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Furman University and N.C. State University. He has his doctoral degree education from NCSU. He is on the College of Education faculty, in the Department of Advanced Studies & Innovation. His B.A. and M.A. are from Furman.

Kelehear will hold the position until a national search is conducted. Approximately 10 finalists will be invited to campus in the fall to meet with campus constituencies.

The new provost, a native of north Georgia, played football at Furman while majoring in both Latin and history. Kelehear is outdoor enthusiast and likes tending to his beehives.
