By Carlos Rodriguez |Sports writerThe Augusta University Athletics Department announced on Thursday morning, June 18, that Timmy Sellers, a sophomore at Charleston Southern, would be transferring to Augusta and join the men’s basketball team for the 2020-21 season.The CSRA won’t be a new site for Sellers, who is from Augusta. Sellers had a successful high school career, achieving many accolades at Glenn Hills here in Augusta.“It feels amazing to come back to my hometown,” said Sellers, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward.Sellers was a full-time varsity player since his sophomore year. During his sophomore and junior year, he earned all-region honors. During his senior campaign he helped the Spartans finish 27-3 overall, as they won the region championship and made a final four appearance in the GHSA Class AA state tournament.That season he posted averages of 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game with a team full of great players who contributed plenty. Sellers was named the region player of the year, Augusta Chronicle Georgia Boys Player of the Year and earned Georgia Class AA first team all-state honors.“Timmy dominated the paint when it came to rebounding on both ends of the court and defending the rim,” said AU basketball color commentator Chad Cook, who watched Sellers play during high school. “The fact that he was able to be our area’s best player and lead his team to a final four finish while not being the focal point of his team’s offensive system means he has the rare skill of being a star in his role.”After the season, Sellers signed to play at Charleston Southern, a division one school that plays in the Big South Conference. His freshman season he played in 27 games, earning 14 starts. He averaged 2.5 points that season and scored a career high 15 points against Trinity Baptist College. His sophomore year he only appeared in two games before redshirting.Coming in next season, Sellers will be considered a redshirt sophomore. He will be coming to Augusta in a similar situation like rising junior Tyshaun Crawford did. Like Sellers, Crawford transferred in last season from Georgia Southern, another division one program, after playing sparingly minutes looking for a better opportunity to showcase his talent.“For Timmy to bring his physical attributes to the table to operate in the paint with Crawford these next few seasons makes for a great scenario in Augusta,” said Cook.Adding Sellers gives the Jags even more depth in the frontcourt that includes Crawford, Robert Barlund, Lee Flenor, Jack Johnson and also incoming freshman Adonnis Easton-Tolbert. The past two seasons the team has saw much success with forwards like Deane Williams, Rafael Monteiro and Crawford, who all have earned PBC honors.“Timmy is an athletic inside player that will provide us the ability to rebound and make athletic plays,” said head coach Dip Metress. “We look forward to developing his offensive game.”“I chose Augusta University because it’s a great program,” said Sellers. “I believe I will bring great work ethic to the team.”Last season the Jags finished second in the Peach Belt and made the NCAA DII Men’s Basketball Tournament for the second consecutive season. With the team only losing Rafael Monteiro, who graduated, next season should be a great one with the new additions to the team to match with an experienced group of players.
