All summer sports camps at AU cancelled

Erin Burditt |Sports writerAugusta University will not be having its annual summer sports camps this year, according to AU Athletics Director Clint Bryant. Bryant announced last week that the camps have been cancelled due to public health concerns related to the pandemic. Even with Georgia partially reopening, Bryant said the university wants to make sure things are safe for all and not being careless with this virus still going around.“Due to COVID-19, summer sports camps for AU Athletics have been cancelled for the year," he said. "We look forward to providing this service again next summer when the environment is hopefully safe for attending."All summer school classes at AU are being done online this summer. Classes started on Monday, May 18.Coach Jack O’Keefe of the men's golf program had been expecting dozens of young golfers to his camp and had to return funds to their parents.“It is unfortunate, but it is the safe and right thing to do," O'Keefe said of closing the camps.Other camps closed included men's and women's basketball, volleyball and softball.Instead of hosting the camps, coaches of the effected sports will focus on recruiting and getting ready for the upcoming seasons, although those are still up in the air depending on the NCAA and the conferences.Dip Metress, the men's basketball coach, has learned that the NCAA is limiting Division II to just 22 games next season, meaning six less regular-season games."It's not ideal, but it beats the alternative of not playing at all," Metress said. Contact Erin Burditt at eburditt@augusta.edu.
